Thirty-five-year-old Mark Anthony of Lot 56 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, yesterday appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Anthony denied that on July 23, last, at Ruimveldt Police Station, he told Corporal Eastman that his name was Justin Tony Chase, knowing that was false.
The defendant was represented by Attorney-at-law Ted Vasconcellos who asked that his client be released on reasonable bail citing that he has no antecedent and no pending matter in any other court.
The lawyer argued that his client was in custody since July 23 which is beyond the 72 hours.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing that he is a flight risk and if granted bail will not return to court for the trial.
The prosecutor told the court that on the day in question a police officer was driving when the defendant who was also driving observed the officer and began acting in a suspicious manner.
The prosecutor added that the defendant collided with the officer’s vehicle and when he was approached by the officer he tried to get rid of a suitcase that was in his possession.
The police officer then called for back-up and gave chase after the defendant who was later intercepted and found to have a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems in his possession suspected to be narcotics.
He was then arrested and taken to the station where he told the police that his name was Justin Tony Chase.
The prosecutor also told the court that a charge of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking will be brought against the defendant.
The magistrate granted bail to the defendant in the sum of $15,000 and he will make his next court appearance on August 14.
