Two men who were allegedly armed with cutlasses when they robbed a man of his iPhone appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday charged with robbery under-arms.
Jamal Barnes, 20, of 1833 Festival City, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, and Azuma Small,21, of 74 Campbellville, Georgetown, both denied the charge which alleged that on July 21, at Campbellville, while armed with cutlasses, they robbed Ched Jaijin of an Apple iPhone valued $200,000. The virtual complainant was not present in court.
The two men were each released on $20,000 bail and ordered to return to court on August 11, for statements. They were also ordered to report to the Kitty Police Station until determination of the matter.
During an application for bail, Attorney-at-Law Euclin Gomes told the court that Small is a construction worker and has no antecedents. The lawyer argued that his client was in custody at the Prashad Nagar Police Station, the day before the alleged robbery occurred. However, Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore disclosed that the defendants were arrested minutes after the robbery was committed by a passing police patrol. In fact, Prosecutor Moore stated that Barnes and Small were caught in the act.
The iPhone was recovered, according to the prosecutor.
Barnes was unrepresented by counsel.
