FINANCIAL INJECTION INTO SUDDIE PUBLIC HOSPITAL IS COMMENDABLE

Recently it was announced that the Government signed a line of credit agreement with Export-Import Bank of India totaling US $17.5 Million which will provide much needed upgrading of three Public Hospitals including the Suddie Hospital situated on the Essequibo Coast. The funds will serve to modernize the country’s primary health care systems, according to the subject Minister. Indeed this is quite commendable and will strategically enable patients to be better served especially in Region 2.
The Public Hospital at Suddie has gained considerable attention in recent times. Constant and previous blackouts would have severely affected the efficient functioning of key operational services given that the Institution’s main generator was non- operational. In fact a new generator is required and there was much criticism as to the delay in acquiring same.
I am aware however, that every effort is being made by the Regional Administration to remedy the situation and restore normalcy. Notwithstanding, much more has to be done to enhance the entity’s reliability, reputation and delivery of services. One such key area should be the modernization of the Registry department which collects data, store and maintain patient’s records as well as their ailment history.
Too many paper works continues to be done at the Hospital and in many instances patients have to endure long hours before same is processed and in some cases papers are either being misplaced, stored in the wrong section or even lost. Such has led to recurring frustration and anger of patients, some of whom would travel from far lying areas including Wakenaam, Pomeroon River and even from Region 1.In other instances too, the Hospital has been without sufficient medical supplies which I am assuming is either as a result of limited storage facilities or poor record keeping of medicinal stock.
The Institution therefore can become efficient once more and even enhance its credibility through perseverance, commitment from the staff and Doctors and the Government’s 2020 vision which is to modernize the health care sector in order to achieve desirable and positive impacts on the growing and ageing population. I am impressed therefore with the intended plans by the Government for the Suddie Hospital which is indeed welcome by the people of Region 2.
