The restoration of electricity to some households within the Mabaruma and surrounding communities is imminent with the procurement of a 500-kilowatt generator, according to Region One Chairman, Brentnol Ashley.
The generator, which will be used until a new engine for the permanent gen-set is operational, was procured by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ashley explained.
He told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that the Regional Democratic Council through the Ministry of Communities and the Ministry of Public Infrastructure collaborated for “the resources to procure a new engine,” Ashley noted.
This new engine is expected to arrive shortly in Guyana. This new, larger engine “will be able to power all the homes within the communities,” the Regional Chairman explained.
The generator will power communities as far as Hosororo, Kumaka, Mabaruma, Thomas Hill, Sliver Hill, Barabina and Bumbery.
The new engine for the gen-set is estimated to cost some $16M.
Residents of the Region One communities have been without steady electricity for over five weeks due to the malfunctioning generator that went down on May 15, last.
