– Victim’s daughter testifies
Ameena Garnett, the daughter of murdered forklift operator testified yesterday that she was present on the day that her father and her mother’s lover engaged in a fight which eventually led to her father’s death.
She was called to the stand by State Counsel Siand Dhurjon to lead evidence in the murder trial of Aniki Jones.
Jones, a resident of Lamaha Springs, stands accused of murdering her father, Carl Garnett on December 15, 2013.
Garnett would have called the Lamaha Springs residence to speak with the child that he shared with his estranged wife.
However, following a disagreement over the phone, Garnett is said to have armed himself with a cutlass and went to the home where he confronted Jones.
A fight ensued between the two which left both parties injured. The two men were then taken into the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where Garnett, a 42-year-old father of four from Sophia, Greater Georgetown, succumbed as a result of the injuries received.
Jones is currently facing a trial for the murder before Justice Nareshwar Harnanan and a 12-member mixed jury at the Georgetown High Court.
He is being represented by Attorneys- at- law, Mark Conway and Keoma Griffith.
Yesterday, Ameena Garnett, the victim’s daughter recalled that she was about 18 years old when the incident occurred. She told the court that her parents had separated and her mother was living with Jones, herself and three siblings.
Garnett recalled that it was around 6:20 pm on December 15, 2013 that the telephone rang.
She said her mother was in the kitchen preparing food and her stepfather (Jones) was lying on a bed listening to music. She said that her little sister was on a bed lying next to the man.
Garnett said that her mother spoke to her father over the phone. She said during the telephone call her mother became annoyed.
The witness noted that she went to bathe in a bathroom located in the yard. But not long after that, there were sounds of rapid footsteps in the house.
During the time, she said that she heard a ruckus in the house. She recounted there was what sounded like a scuffle and screams from her mother and sister.
The witness said that she grabbed her towel and rushed into the house. There, she assisted her mother in separating her father and Jones who were engaged in a fight.
After she pulled them apart, Garnett said that she noticed that Jones was bleeding.
She admitted that she took a cutlass from her father and threw it through a window. Garnett told the court too that she did not see any injuries on her father but he was unconscious.
The men were eventually taken away by the police and she later saw them at the hospital—— her father remained unconscious but Jones had on bandages.
The witness reported that her father eventually passed away.
On Wednesday, Detective Superintendant of Police, Joel David, detailed a statement to the court in which he said Jones detailed a fight which eventually led to the man’s demise.
According to the statement which Officer David read to the court, the accused admitted that he was engaged in an altercation with Garnett before the time of his death.
In his the caution statement, the accused told police that he was in a relationship with a woman (Rhonda Garnett) who had left her husband.
The statement outlined that Jones believed that the woman‘s husband was not pleased that she was with him but (himself and Rhonda) lived as husband and wife.
On the day of the incident, Jones told the police that he overheard a conversation between Rhonda and her husband— they had sounded like they were having a row.
Approximately 10 minutes later, Jones said that Garnett walked into his house armed with a cutlass and an altercation ensued between them.
According to statement, Jones told investigators that he is very sorry for what happened to Garnett as a result of the altercation.
“Ah sorry bad. I wish he bin live,” the accused concluded his statement.
