Murder accused Aniki Jones had told police investigators that he was sorry for the incident which led to the death of his girlfriend’s estranged husband. He detailed a fight which eventually led to the man’s demise.
Jones, a resident of Lamaha Springs, stands accused of murdering Carl Garnett. The incident occurred on December 15, 2013.
Initial reports suggested that Garnett was armed with a cutlass and went to the home of the accused and dealt him several chops.
Garnett would have called Jones’ home to speak with the child that he shared with his estranged wife. However, following a disagreement over the phone, Garnett is said to have armed himself with a cutlass and confronted Jones at his home.
A fight ensued between the two which left both parties injured. The two men were then taken into the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where Garnett, a 42-year-old father of four from Sophia, Greater Georgetown, succumbed as a result of the injuries received.
Jones is currently facing a trial for the murder before Justice Nareshwar Harnanan and a mixed 12-member jury at the Georgetown High Court.
He is being represented by Attorneys-at-law, Mark Conway and Keoma Griffith.
Yesterday, Detective Superintendent of Police, Joel David detailed a statement to the court, which he said Jones gave to the police.
Detective David was called to the stand by State Prosecutors Shawnette Austin, Siand Dhurjon and Lisa Case.
According to the statement, which Officer David read to the court, the accused admitted that he was engaged in an altercation with Garnett before the time of his death.
In his caution statement, the accused told police that he was in a relationship with a woman (Rhonda) who had left her husband.
The statement outlined that Jones believed that the woman’s husband was not pleased that she was with him, but they (himself and Rhonda) lived as husband and wife.
On the day of incident, Jones told the police that he overheard a conversation between Rhonda and her husband — it sounded as though they were having an argument.
Approximately 10 minutes later, Jones said that Garnett walked into his house armed with a cutlass and an altercation ensued between them.
According to the statement, Jones told investigators that he was very sorry for what happened to Garnett as a result of the altercation.
“Ah sorry bad, I wish he bin live,” the accused concluded his statement by saying.
A cutlass and three knives were also presented to the Court by Detective Corporal Floyd Hosannah yesterday.
The alleged murder weapons were tendered into evidence before the Court.
Hosannah faced questions from Defence Counsel, Mark Conway.
The detective had told the court that the knives collected from the scene of the crime were covered with a reddish substance which appeared to be blood.
The detective explained further that the knives were not the subject of fingerprint analysis because the items were covered in the apparent bloody substance.
