Missing woman’s body fished out of trench

The body of a 65-year-old woman who went missing two days ago, was discovered floating in a trench at Mocha, East Bank Demerara, around 11:00 hrs yesterday.

Rita Fredericks, a mother of eight of Twelfth Field, Barnwell, North Mocha, was last seen alive on Tuesday morning, imbibing with her husband at a relative’s shop at Tenth Field. Her body was found a short distance from where she was consuming alcohol.
It is suspected that the woman might have gone to the trench to wash her feet when she slipped and fell into the water.
One of the victim’s daughters, Marcelle Fredericks, said that she had left home on Saturday and went to spend some time with her daughter at Grove, East Bank Demerara. It was while she was heading home yesterday morning that she found out that her mother had been missing.
“I was going home around eight-thirty and when I come out the bus, somebody asked me if I hear what happened to my mother, and they told me that she missing since Tuesday, so right away I went to her home and I see my father and I asked him,” the woman recalled.
She explained that her father told her that he and his wife went to collect their pension and while returning home they went to purchase liquor.
“He said that they stop by the shop and they went drinking, and he wasn’t ready to go home when she wanted to go, so he tell her to walk up and he would join her, and like she get vex and left,” Marcelle Fredericks said.
She added that when her father went home and did not see her, he raised an alarm and persons started searching. They even searched the trench for the woman’s body, but did not find anything.
Fredericks said that after speaking with her father, she went back to the shop to ask persons in the area—it was while she was making enquiries that she heard a relative screaming.
“She (a friend) went to bathe at the trench and she see mommy head floating and she started to holler,” the younger Fredericks said.
The woman noted that when her mother’s body was removed from the trench it was swollen.
The body is presently at the Lyken Funeral Parlour awaiting a Post Mortem.
