A man and his wife who assaulted their disabled neighbour were brought before the court and charged for assaulting their 55-year-old neighbour. The couple appeared before magistrate Zamilla Ally in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s
Courts and pleaded not guilty to the charge. Cherish O’Connor was placed on $60,000 bail while her husband, Dexter Weeks was placed on $25,000 bail.
The couple was instructed to return to court on July 21. The woman son, Pagan Thompson, of Lot 975 Hendy Block X, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, had reached out to this publication in May last, when he appealed to the relevant authorities to sanction the two neighbours for assaulting his disabled mother.
His mother, 55-year-old Debra Thompson, who is deaf and dumb, had been the victim of a physical assault by the neighbours. The man said that he is glad that the matter is in court and hopes that he will get justice for his mother.
Thompson went on to say that due to the constant assault by the neighbours, he had to relocate his mother for her safety.
Thompson added that his mother started living with him two years ago, after the death of her mother. And it was soon after that the neighbours began making Debra the target of their insults.
Thompson said that he and his wife would normally leave his mom home since they both worked. When he returned he would be greeted with complaints of the neighbour pelting bricks on the roof and at his mother when she went to the bathroom, which is located at the back of the house.
The man said that the situation became so bad, he insisted that his mother bathe before he and his wife left for work and remain in the house, so as to avoid any contact with the neighbours.
The matter came to a head on May 10, last, when his wife took his mother to collect her social assistance benefit from the Campbellville Post Office, as she would normally do.
Thompson said that his wife brought his mother part of the way back home on her bicycle since she was late for work, leaving Debra to walk the short distance to the house.
But on that day the neighbours attacked the woman on the road when she was passing.
According to other neighbours in the village the man and his wife grabbed the woman by her shirt and dealt her several blows.
Thompson said that his younger brother would usually check on his mother when they are at work.
The brother said that on the day of the incident while he was on his way to see his mother he found her crying on the road and when he inquired as to what was the matter, she indicated to him that the neighbours had pelted her and had assaulted her.
He recounted that he then subsequently informed other relatives of what had transpired.
