Lethem road network to get estimated $242.5M upgrade

Persons who utilise the Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) road network, can now breathe a sigh of relief.
Contractors submitted bids at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) last Tuesday, to carry out rehabilitative works on the system.
The engineer’s estimate was announced at $242.5M and the procuring entity is the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.
All the roads in the newly-declared municipality are in a deplorable state and the council has been advocating for new roads.
The roads to be upgraded are Barrack Retreat Road, (the road from the roundabout to Lethem Power Company, the Tabatinga Main Road, Tabatinga Drive (right through to school street,) Middle Street and the Airport Road.
Mayor of the Township Carton Beckles, said earlier this month that Church Road, Centaur Boulevard and First and Second Streets, have also been identified to be upgraded in the event there are savings remaining from repairing the five initial streets.
The municipality itself has some finances, for which it can upgrade a few more of the roundabouts, within the township.
Mayor Beckles had explained that these works will not be undertaken until those that are being executed by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure are completed because the municipality does not want to disrupt the work being done by the Ministry.
Permanent Secretary Geoffrey Vaughn was contacted yesterday. He was asked if job opportunities will be made available to locals. The official said that while the ministry encourages contractors to utilise the local labour force in hinterland locations, the decision is entirely up to the contractors. He noted that the ministry cannot force the contractors.
