A 59-year-old security officer was yesterday jailed for four years on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving. Fifty nine-year-old Michael Fraser, of Lot 61 Block Y Annandale, East Coast Demerara, was convicted for driving motorcar PSS 8813 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Bertrum Cummings.
The road fatality occurred on November 5, 2016 at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
The custodial sentence was handed down by Chief Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford stated that on the day in question, Cummings and a woman were walking west along Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
Fraser who was driving the motor vehicle at a fast rate collided with Cummings who was walking on the outer end of the roadway. The injured man was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Fraser was also found guilty of driving under the influence. At the time of the accident his breath alcohol content was 160 micro grammes. For this offence, he was fined $7,500 with an alternative of one week in jail.
