A labourer of Springlands, Upper Corentyne had his freedom cut short after he appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court to answer to a murder charge.
Lincoln Odel alias ‘Shadow’, 29, stood before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh, to listen to the charge read to him.
Odel, on June 2, 2017 at Hazel Street, Springlands, Berbice murdered Fitzherbert Grimes during the course of a robbery.
Prosecutor Inspector, Orin Joseph, during the case had suggested that the accused undergo a Psychiatric Evaluation. However Magistrate Singh quickly shut down the option of an evaluation being done contending that Odel was mentally stable since he appeared before the court for previous misdemeanors. The Psychiatric Evaluation was denied by the Magistrate and he was remanded to prison until June 19th, 2017.
According to the facts of the case, Fitzherbert Grimes was beaten to death by Lincoln Odel, aka ‘Shadow’, over Grimes’s pension funds. Reports are that the Pensioner was at home with the accused and a relative of his when the attack took place. Dexter Parks, who provided home care services to Grimes for over a year told Kaieteur News that he was with the “old man” that day along with Odel and his son, when he stepped out for a short while to purchase a beverage at a nearby shop in the village.
Upon his return, he noticed Grimes lying on the ground and Odel shouting “look wuh happen deh; look wuh happen deh”. He stated that he confronted Odel that he had done the act but he denied. However neighbours who saw the accused beat the pensioner shouted from their homes that he was lying.
Parks revealed that the accused reportedly choked Grimes before stomping on him several times rendering him unconscious. The relevant authorities were contacted and Grimes was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he succumbed hours later due to the injuries.
Odel was arrested as he was exiting the Pensioner’s yard.
Meanwhile, in custody, Odel confessed to investigators that he had murdered Grimes after he (Grimes) refused to hand over his pension.
