Overstaying cost Cubans $60,000 each

City Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday ordered two Cuban nationals to pay a fine of $60,000 each or in default six months’ imprisonment, and after paying the fine or serving the jail time, they must immediately be deported back to Cuba.

William Cascaro, 45, and Vankezie Barban, 29, both pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that they both overstayed in Guyana between the period of October 5, 2016 and April, 9 2017.
Police Prosecutor, Shawn Gonsalves told the court that the Cubans arrived in Guyana legally on October 5, 2016, via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and were both granted four months stay each.
The prosecutor added that on June 1, the Cubans were in a motor vehicle travelling to Lethem when the vehicle was stopped by police ranks at the Lethem Multi-purpose complex.
Police ranks searched the Cubans passports and it was discovered that they had overstayed their time in Guyana.
Through an interpreter they both told the court that they came to Guyana with a tourist visa and were seeking employment.
Nevertheless, the magistrate ordered that both Cubans be deported immediately upon payment of the fine or serving the default prison term.
Only last week two Chinese nationals and three Venezuelans appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and were fined and deported for overstaying in Guyana.
Zenyong Laing, 32 and Zedim Laing, 33 both of Lot 628 South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that both of them between June 20, 2016 and May 30, 2017 at Georgetown, failed to comply with conditions subjected to which any permit had been granted to them to overstay the period.
The brothers were granted permission to stay in Guyana from the period of May19 to July 20, 2016. They overstayed.
Meanwhile on Wednesday before the same magistrate, three Venezuelans were fined $15,000 each or in default two weeks imprisonment for entering Guyana illegally.

Gilda Yudith Garcia Barreto, 18; Geamary Carolina Alvarado, 29; and Jorkjana Mayuslin Vilera, 30; all pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that between May 6, and April 20, 2017 they entered Guyana by sea and disembarked at Eteringbang without the consent of an Immigration officer.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that on May 27 the defendants were asked by police to present their passports and it was then observed that they have overstayed their time in Guyana.
The women all claimed that they came to Guyana to work so that they could send money back to their families in Venezuela, since everyone in that country is suffering.
