Youths get career guidance at strategic workshop

Youths were the primary target when the Salcah Youth Federation, which falls under the purview of the Guyana Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, hosted a Career Guidance Workshop.
At the forum, which was venued at the Umana Yana, youths ages 10 years and older were able benefit from presentations about career guidance. In fact, the main goal of the workshop was to equip them to make proper decisions regarding what careers they will pursue in life.
As such, the workshop featured presentations on different personality types and matching your personality with careers; career exploration, whereby they were able to learn about the various occupations available.
At the forum they were given factors to consider when choosing a career; goal-setting; skills development for the workplace; and effective study habits.
The presentations were done by Mrs. Deborah Thomas, former Principal of the Cyril Potter College of Education; Mrs. Genevieve Whyte-Nedd; Mr. Will Campbell, Cyril Potter College of Education and University of Guyana Lecturer; Dr. Clement Henry, Criminology Consultant; Dr. Barbara Reynolds, Vice Chancellor of International Engagement at the University of Guyana; and Mr. Michael Kendall, Treasurer of the Guyana Conference of Seventh-day Adventist.
The workshop also featured an entrepreneurship panel to cater for out-of-school youths who may have the capacity to pursue business initiatives.
The panel moreover included entrepreneur Elvin English; Chris de Caires, owner of the Furniture Factory; Farmer and Trader Lyndon Griffith; Caterer, Dale Brown; Engineer Elon Sooknanan; and owner of Ideaone Printing and Graphics, Mr. Godfrey Proctor.
While the Salcah Youth Federation is a youth group under the Guyana Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, the workshop was widely targeted and included over 200 registrants, including students from Queen’s College, Tucville Secondary; and youths from churches within Georgetown, East Coast and East Bank areas.
An exhibition by various institutions was also a part of the workshop including the Creative Arts Unit of the Ministry of Culture; Guyana Police Force; Guyana Nursing Council; Cyril Potter College of Education; Institute of Private Enterprise Development; Government Technical Institute and the University of the Southern Caribbean.
The workshop also featured a career coaching session where young people were grouped with already accomplished professionals in fields they are interested in, in order to learn about their experience and what to expect in those fields.
Youths were also treated to a testimonial by young medical Doctor, Patrice Douglas, who spoke about her sacrifices and challenges to accomplishing her dreams.
