DPP appeals Coverden causing death case

Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs Shalimar Ali-Hack has filed an appeal in the matter for which Jason Bhaskaran was freed of charges of causing death by dangerous driving, last week.
The court had dismissed the matter against Bhaskaran after a no case submission was presented before Magistrate Judy Latchman. The Court accepted that the case against Bhaskaran lacked evidence to convict him of the crime, following arguments by Attorney-at-law, Sonia Parag.
Bhaskaran, of Track ‘B’ Timehri, East Coast Demerara was accused of driving motor vehicle PHH, 8034 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Rudolph Bess. It was further alleged that he also caused the death of 16-year-old Hansranie Persaud by driving in a dangerous manner.
According to information disseminated from the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions, (DPP), Mrs. Ali-Hack had prepared a Notice of Appeal in the matter pursuant to a complaint by the family of the deceased.
Bhaskaran, a General Manager of the Guyana Quartz Sand Inc. was indicted for the dangerous driving more than one year ago. The fatal accident occurred at Coverden, East Bank Demerara, on April 17, 2016.
According to reports, Bess, 23, of Lot 620 Kaneville, East Bank Demerara and Persaud, 16, of Lot 478 Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara were killed after the motorcycle in which they were riding crashed into a pickup vehicle.
The accident reportedly occurred after they were returning home from a party at a Wash Bay, in Soesdyke.
It was reported that Bess’s skull was crushed while one of Persaud’s legs was severed.
The teenager is said to have sneaked out her parents’ house to attend the party with Bess, whom her mother later learnt was her boyfriend.
Bhaskaran had initially denied the allegations. He had been placed on a total of $400,000 bail.
