Mark Moseley, who was shot in the foot last Friday by a City Police Constable after he allegedly
robbed a pensioner of $1,000, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday and was remanded to prison until May 30.
Moseley of 94 Charlotte Street, Georgetown, denied the charge which alleged that on April 28, at Robb Street, Georgetown, while armed with a knife, he robbed Jameel Azeez of the cash.
It was further alleged that on the same day at the City Constabulary Outpost, Regent Street, Georgetown, he behaved in a disorderly manner. According to reports, the elderly man was followed by Moseley after conducting a transaction. It was reported that the defendant stole the man’s wallet and attempted to flee and was shot during a bid to escape.
A City Police rank commanded Moseley to stop running or else he would shoot. But the man paid no heed and continued proceeding, which resulted in the rank opening fire and hitting him in the left leg.
When he was apprehended and taken to the City Constabulary, Moseley behaved in a disorderly manner and attempted to relieve a City Constable of his firearm. He also made attempts to jump out a vehicle which he was placed in to be taken to the hospital. Moseley is said to have also resisted efforts to handcuff him and attempted to bite one of the City Police ranks.
City Police Prosecutor Quacey Baveghems opposed bail for the defendant citing that he was charged previously for simple larceny. However, Prosecutor Baveghems disclosed that the matter was dismissed after the virtual complainant refused to give evidence.
According to the prosecutor, Moseley is in the habit of loitering around the Stabroek Market area and getting involved in criminal activities. It was pointed out by the prosecutor that the defendant is a flight risk, since he regularly travels to Suriname and French Guiana.
In refusing bail for Moseley, Magistrate Annette Singh reminded him that he appeared in her court before and had promised to be of good behaviour. An attorney-at-law for the father of two petitioned for bail during which she told the court that her client is in need of medical attention and that he is not a flight risk.
