Gladwin Welch was yesterday placed on $100,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a charge of sexual activity with a child.
Welch, 54, of Lot 184 New Settlement Street Mocha, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the allegation.
The charge read that between December 1 and December 24, 2016, at Lot 281 New Settlement Street Mocha, East Bank Demerara, he engaged in sexual activity by means of touching and rubbing with a nine-year-old female.
According to information, the child’s mother sent her to the defendant’s home to pick eddo leaves when the defendant told her to enter his home. Upon entering the defendant’s home, she was asked by the defendant whether she has pubic hair.
He told the child that he would not allow her to leave the house until she showed him. The child obliged to show him her private parts and he touched her inappropriately.
When the child returned home, she told her parents and the matter was reported to the police. Welch was later questioned by the police, arrested and charged for the offence.
He will make his next court appearance on April 27.
