Three GPL employees charged for scamming customer

Three GPL employees were yesterday arranged before City Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a charge of attempting to steal.
Quacy Mackenzie, 30 of South Ruimveldt, Technician Garfield O’Neil, 29, of Section ‘A’ Block ‘X’ Diamond, East Bank Demerara and Alicia Steele, 28, of Lamaha Gardens, Georgetown, all denied the allegation which stated that on April 7 at William Street, Kitty, with the intent to steal, they demanded Mitra Persaud to pay $40,000 for them to install a meter.
Mackenzie was represented by Attorney-at-Law James Bond who told the court that his client has no prior matters in any other court and has never been convicted. Bond further told the court that his client is the father of one and the sole breadwinner for his family.
Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh objected to bail being granted to all three defendants citing the nature and gravity of the offence and the penalty it attracts.
The court heard that on the day in question the defendants went to the Virtual Complainant home to investigate a meter and threatened that they will remove it if he did not pay them.
It was further alleged that on April 10, at William Street, Kitty, Mackenzie obtained the sum of $65,000 from Mitra Persaud by falsely pretending that he was in a position to install a GPL meter.
Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh had no objection to bail being granted, and told the court that the investigation is complete.
O’Neil and Steele were both granted bail in the sum of $40,000 while Mackenzie was granted bail in the sum of $100,000. The trio will make their next court appearance on May 15.
