Several witnesses testified yesterday in the trial of Deosaran Bisnauth, who is facing the Judge and Jury for the murder of Robert Mangal on July 6, 2013 at Enmore, East Coast Demerara.
Yesterday, Bisnauth’s trial commenced before Justice Navindra Singh and a 12-member mixed jury at the Georgetown High Court.
According to the facts presented by State Prosecutors Tuanna Hardy and Siand Dhurjon, the two people were said to have been imbibing at a shop in Enmore, when the incident occurred.
Shop owner, Daiwattie Guyadeen testified that she was in her shop when two men entered. She said that she knew one of them as Manoj. The other was a stranger.
According to the woman, the men purchased a half bottle of rum and some cigarettes. The witness recalled that one of men asked her to call a taxi.
She said that she remained behind the counter of the shop and obliged the request of the customer. According to Guyadeen, the men joined the other customers and started to drink at the shop. The woman said that some time after that she heard a ruckus outside.
Guyadeen told the court that she ventured to the bridge of her property; there she noticed that a crowd had gathered.
“When I go, I see the person that asked me to call the taxi, lying on the ground … I get frightened and run back inside because I is a pressure case…”
Guyadeen’s testimony was followed by the evidence from other witnesses including Stanislaus Da Silva and Karen Mangal (relatives of the deceased). Da Silva and Mangal both testified that they had assisted the victim in getting medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC).
Da Silva, (the dead man’s father) testified to finding him on the roadway in front of the rum shop, on the date of the incident. The man said that he was under the impression that his son was heavily intoxicated and had lost consciousness.
He told the court that another man had assisted him with getting a taxi to take his son home.
The following day, the witness said that he realised that his son was still not responding and decided to take him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The man said that he then returned to the shop to ascertain what had really happened to his son. As a result of the information he gathered, Da Silva told the court that he reported the matter to the police.
The witness recalled that his son passed away about a month after the incident.
Police Detective, Paul Tirat, later testified to conducting investigations into the matter. Tirat said that sometime after the incident, the accused was arrested for a crime.
According to the officer the allegation put to the accused, is that on July 6, 2013, he lashed Robert Mangal, called Trevor, causing him to receive injuries and to become hospitalized.
After the allegation was put to Bisnauth, Tirat recalled that the accused replied “Officer he (Mangal) run me with a bottle and I lash he to defend myself. “
The policeman also recalled that a caution statement was taken from the accused in the presence of his (Bisnauth’s) mother and other police officers.
The trial is scheduled to continue at 9:00 am today.
