If was an Indian wedding dem use to serve nowta. A man use to walk round de village and share out yellow rice. That was de invitation. Once you get de rice, you know you was invited. If is a rich man, he use to send a man round de village wid a bell inviting people. Black people and Indian alike use to accept de invitation. Was feast fuh so.
Things get modern when people use to print fancy invitation and send to who dem want at de wedding. That system get even more sophisticated, because inside, people use to put a list. Sometimes de list does indicate wha de bride and groom want fuh dem gift. Sometimes de list inside does actually tell people wheh to shop fuh de gift.
Then dem does have people who does indicate that de bride and groom only accepting cash. De other day, dem boys get an invitation to go to a wedding that was at a hotel. Dem feel so nice that dem decide to tun up wid dem two long hand.
Dem go to de front door and dem see a sign mark enter. When dem enter dem see two door. One mark ladies, de other mark men, Dem enter de door wha mark men and see two more door.
One mark relative or friend of de groom; de other mark relative or friend of de bride. Dem push de wan wha mark relative or friend of de groom. Right away dem see two door. One door mark gift and de other mark no gift.
Well since dem boys didn’t have gift dem push de door wha mark no gift and find demself outside de hotel. Pun de door dem see a sign. “Wha you think at all? In this hard economic time you got de nerve to come here wid no gift, swing you two long hand, and expect to eat free food and drink free likker? Get you ass from here.”
