Dear Editor,
When one observes the current lackluster performance of President David Granger as the Head of State, one remains convinced that the May 2015 elections was the greatest misnomer in Guyana’s political history because of the promises from Candidate Granger on the campaign were dumped into the garbage bin as soon as he moved into State House.
The fact remains that the 2015 elections were the defeat of former President Donald Ramotar rather than the success of David Granger. The leader of a political party who has been in the public eyes for so long as Ramotar is heavily exposed, so much so that his political enemies become as numerous and formidable as his political friends. This is not to discount that Ramotar was an absolute failure politically, and was seen as a puppet of former President Bharat Jagdeo.
Granger, on the other hand, was a relative unknown to the nation, only familiar to his army colleagues many of whom described him as a non-dynamic Colonel and part of a small group of Georgetown elites. But to the masses he was a literal unknown. Even many of the Indian businessmen of Georgetown did not know of the name Granger before he became the leader of the PNC. Thus Granger did not have to contend with the political animosities marshaled against the usual political leaders like Robert Corbin and Carl Greenidge. Even the PPP was extremely light on him until it was too late.
But now that Granger is on the hot seat, he is in the public spot-light and his knitting is showing. Many of the adjectives his former army buddies attributed to him are now being exposed; indecisive, aloft, poor leadership, inability to conceive big ideas, and totally at sea on the finances of any organization. His lack of the required core competence to do the job stands exposed today. So even though the allegation is now out in the public that he carefully planned with people like Raphael Trotman (to deliver the AFC) and Joe Harmon (to deliver the GDF) all along to elevate himself to the top job, Trotman and Harmon cannot save the Granger presidency today from the public eye, even though he tries his earnest best to hide from the public by hosting only one press conference since he attained office.
The people are judging him every minute of the day and from all indications the majority today stands ready to rate the Granger Presidency with an “F” Grade performance. If the elections were held today, I am convinced that David Arthur Granger would lose the elections to the PPP, even if that party was to run with a political novice like Charles Ramson Jr. or a political washout like Clement Rohee.
The PNC has a lot of work to do to repair the damage done by this extremely visionless and aloft Granger administration. The 2020 elections are theirs to win because they have already lost it if the 2017 sentiments of the people are an indicator. Let us see what the PNC shall do for the ordinary people over the next 2 years?
The PPP, on the other hand, is facing heavy tail wind on their current favourite candidate, Jagdeo. Is this their only choice? Is former Attorney General Anil Nandlall a serious second best option or Frank Anthony with a strong running mate like Carolyn Rodrigues? Isn’t it possible for the PPP presidential candidate to be Amerindian?
The next 2 years will be the best political years for Guyana since independence because there is a very high possibility that the Granger government will be a one term government and the people will have no appetite for a third force. This will be a straight fight between the PNC and the PPP and they will both have to dig deep to reinvent themselves to win the elections
