Following more than a week of illness, 10-year-old Rosanne Harris succumbed at her Public Road,
La Penitence home, yesterday. The child’s mother, Samantha Peters, said that her daughter fell ill after a classmate would have kicked her in the region of her stomach.
Rosanne attended the St. Stephen’s Primary School located in Charlestown, Georgetown. Peters said that two Fridays ago her daughter came home complaining of not feeling well in her stomach. She said that when she asked what happened, her daughter responded that a student by the name of ‘Tyrese’ kicked her to the stomach.
According to Peters, on Saturday and Sunday her daughter was complaining about pains and began vomiting. She said that her father had gone to the school and enquired about the incident in the new week. The only compensation the family received according to Peters was ‘sorry’ from Tyrese’s mother.
“What I gonna do with sorry now; sorry can’t help me.” She said that last Thursday her daughter was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) where she underwent a number of tests including an ultrasound but her condition remained the same.
She said that on Friday, Rosanne complained about feeling as if she had diarrhea but when taken to the washroom, ‘nothing ain’t come so I took her back to bed.”
Peters said that yesterday when she checked on her daughter after waking up, she asked her if she wanted to get up and have a bath or clean her skin. Thechild nodded in the affirmative. Peters said that she left the room for a moment and heard the scream of her other daughter.
According to Rosanne’s older sister, when she checked on her sibling and felt her arm, it was stiff and cold. “When I raise up she hand, it didn’t stay up, it just fall right back down.” She said that there was blood running from her sister’s nose as her lifeless body lay on the bed.
Rosanne’s father, Randel Harris, in an emotional state, said that when he had visited the school concerning the issue, he did not want to engage in an unfriendly confrontation with the parent of the child who allegedly kicked his daughter.
The child’s father said, “This come as a real shock.” The dead child’s mother said that the family will have to find money to finance a funeral and that will be difficult.
At the scene were relatives and friends who were both upset at the unfortunate situation and emotional since nobody had expected the child to pass away.
