With the aim of promoting the sport among the seniors, The Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) on Friday last launched its inaugural Inter County Masters tournament at Mike’s Pharmacy at Blygezight, Bel Air.
The tournament, which will be played on a round robin basis, will commence on April 15 and conclude on April 16 at Ogle Community Centre ground, East Coast Demerara.
The teams competing in the tournament are Valvoline and Wellman of Demerara, Trophy Stall of Essequibo and Permaul’s Trading of Berbice. The winning team will take home a trophy and $200,000 and the runner up a trophy and $100,000. The tournament’s best batsman, best bowler as well as man-of-the-match in the final will also be rewarded.
Prior to the final, an exhibition game will be played between Demerara and Berbice females in which the winner will pocket a trophy and $50,000 and the runner up a trophy and $25,000.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, president of the GFSCA, Ramchand Ragbeer, expressed gratitude to the sponsors, adding that he is expecting a keenly competitive tournament. Organising Secretary of the GFSCA Wayne Jones stated that the tournament will be held under the rules of the GFSCA and while it’s only for players over the age of 45, teams will be allowed to field two players who are over 45. Jones related that Bar-b-que will be on sale on both days at the venue at a cost of $1,000 and fans can obtain tickets prior to the competition at Mike’s Pharmacy, Sankar Auto Works and Trophy Stall. He related that admission to the venue is $200, but patrons who are in possession of Bar-B-que tickets will be given free entry into the venue.
In addressing the gathering, CEO of Sankar Auto Works, Sase Sankar, who is one of the official sponsors under the Valvoline brand, said that they are pleased to be associated with the tournament and he expects a successful one. He added that the Valvoline is one of their best achievement over the past few years and they intend the make it one of the most popular lubricant locally.
Anil Beharry, who represented Permaul’s Trading and Distribution of Berbice, lauded the GFSCA for the initiative and said they are proud to be part of such a wonderful tournament. He informed that this competition is the brain child of Mike Singh and Mr. Permaul, and that it will grow from strength to strength whereas they are looking at staging the Open category in the future.
Mike Singh CEO of Mike’s Pharmacy said that while he is happy that the tournament, which is another level from the regular club competition, has become a reality, he is hoping that fans can see some exciting action throughout the tournament.
Trophy Stall head Ramesh Sunich added that he is excited to be part of the action and thanked the GFSCA for the opportunity. He pledged his continued support for sports.
A PA system will provide on-field updates, while fans can contact Jones on 650 1790 and Ean Bacchus on 661 8263 to solicit information on the Bar-B-que tickets. Sankar’s Auto Works, Trophy Stall, Permaul’s Trading and Distribution and Mike’s Pharmacy under their Wellman brand are the sponsors on board.
