DCC elections set for today, but all is not well at club

The membership of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), one of the older and more established clubs in the country, are scheduled to meet at 6:00pm to hold elections for an executive to run the affairs of the club.
All is not well at the institution with various accusations being leveled at the President Alfred Mentore by many members. Efforts were made yesterday to mediate the impasse but proved unsuccessful.
One member and former club President, Sherlock Atwell, shed some light on the dispute in an interview with Kaieteur Sport, informing that they could not resolve the key problems.
Atwell informed that no elections were held at the club for three years and only the President, Mentore, and Secretary Seon Greaves, who also performs as Treasurer of recent, have been performing functions for some time now.
Alfred, it seems, is attempting to run for the post of President. However, the DCC Constitution states in Article 111, 3:01 – (Composition, Election …) – (111) ‘A member shall not be eligible for election as President after he or she has held the position of President for five consecutive terms.’
Mentore has been at the helm for more than five terms this newspaper was informed.
One big point of contention was that up to press time yesterday no voters list was available to the membership to see who were eligible to vote.
Many members were not informed, as is the norm, when they were in default of paying dues so when many attempted to correct this anomaly they were denied. Atwell said this seems to be a ploy to interfere with the rights of some members, as many as over 30, being able to choose the leadership they so desire.
The members are angry and are asking for a proper list of voters be presented prior to the 6:00pm start of the Annual General Meeting. It is felt that many of those not allowed to pay their dues be allowed to do so because the customary process was not followed of informing persons when they were in default.
Questioned on the involvement of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) to help find a solution, Atwell informed that they were initially asked to intervene and did.
They met the parties and Mentore had promised at that meeting to have elections since February, however that was not the case and it was deferred to today. The GCA will be sending observers to today’s meeting but under the constitution of the club, they cannot really dictate on the outcome.
It is hoped that better judgment prevail and the constitution is followed at today’s meeting and the DCC can elect a competent executive to run their affairs.
