A 32-year-old farmer was yesterday remanded to prison for allegedly killing his wife, whose lifeless body was discovered on a roadway at Lethem two Saturdays ago.
The man, Peter Juan, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on February 18, at Central Rupununi, Essequibo, he murdered Justina Leonard, 47, of Shulinab Village.
According to reports, the woman’s body was found lying on the roadway on the day in question. Kaieteur News understands that the couple was imbibing at a shop and later left for home.
It was reported that Juan arrived home before his wife when he discovered that he did not have the keys to their home. He reportedly walked back to meet his wife, when he saw her lying motionless on the road with her face covered in blood.
Detectives had arrested Juan after the find. However, the police kept him in custody pending a post mortem examination, which revealed that Leonard died of blunt trauma and a fractured skull.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that the case file is incomplete. The murder accused was instructed to return to court on March 7.
