Dear Editor,
I read the recent ‘The Freddie Kissoon column’ about our countrymen losing respect and consequently “civilization”; please allow me to relate something I noticed since the 1970s days of charter flights between our country and the UK. A young woman whom I helped to look after since her early childhood came to spend one such holiday with my 3-person family, contributing no money, doing no work, etc. She bought a pair of stockings which needing dyeing a darker shade, moaned about it, and then one day while I was out, dyed her stocking in my rice pot! She did not scrub the pot thoroughly, and when I cooked rice and it turned brown and I could not understand why, she stopped eating my rice and bought takeaways instead! She could have poisoned my family – without a word. I realised after she had left for Guyana what had happened and thought “how sad”. I wish this letter could be published, so that others could realise what being civilised is NOT!
