Government says it is fine-tuning plans for Mashramani celebrations which are supposed to be held in the first three months of the year.
According to the Ministry of Education, meetings are taking place at the national
and regional levels with Lennox Canterbury, the event coordinator and Minister Nicolette Henry assuring that much entertainment and edu-tainment are carded as the country launches into the mode of ‘Celebrating with Dignity, Liberty and Greater Unity’.
“The all-encompassing events are aplenty, stretching across most of the 10 administrative regions with the main, major costume and float parade slated for February 23 in the nation’s capital- Georgetown,” Ministry Henry assures.
It is the plan to host three national float parades at the adult level.
The first is the costume and float parade in Georgetown on February 23 – Republic Day. “Building on the progress we have made over the years with this event, this year’s parade which would feature a mega showcase of various contingents aspiring to display their creativity in keeping with the theme, but the overarching emphasis will be on Guyana as the example of a green state to the world,” Canterbury said.
It is the aim of the organizing committees’ to have designers infuse their creative genius with that of wire benders, painters and others and “pull out all the stops to not just compete with each other but to show unified revelry through your contingents and creations, capturing the cultural essence, and creativity of Guyana at its peak through a most colorful and topical spectacle,” Minister Henry advised.
Several corporate citizens have indicated their interest: some will participate actively in the float parade while others have opted to sponsor some Mashramani-related events.
“Most government ministries have already confirmed that they will be part of the float parade. Additionally, the committee has encouraged them (the ministries) to also plan excursions and domestic group visits to locations to support events to encourage domestic tourism,” the Minister said.
The grand affair would see contingents from most of the regions as well as those from Georgetown; even Bartica is promising to make a return to the road parade with a mega 150- strong contingent.
“This is a move we hope will be mirrored by other regions who will get very jealous by Bartica’s announcement and come aboard,” Canterbury stated.
The next carded float parade is scheduled for February 26 in Berbice where much fun and frolic is assured, Finally on March 5, all roads will lead to Linden for even more revelry, the ministry said.
A special meeting was held on Friday last with designers and sponsors.
Mash is considered the ultimate national showcase for designers and corporate entities to flaunt their talents.
There have been grumblings after the government last year decided to shift the route from Church Street to Brickdam.
