Dear Editor,
Reading Ralph Ramkarran’s insightful piece in Conversation Tree of December 31, 2016, he said “The attempted unlawful seizure of Red House, unlawful restriction of the movement of the occupants and the unlawful sequestration of its property, bring back sad memories of times past when the rule of law in Guyana was being severely undermined as a result of political oppression and authoritarian rule. Let us hope that this event is not a foreboding of what will happen in 2017.” I have also read a letter by another commentator who said “Red House is not about race”. Both of these statements have caused me to ponder.
But the action led by former PNC Vice Chairman, Minister Volda Lawrence has transformed this entire RED HOUSE game into an episode of unpleasant competition in Guyana. Why were the PNC activists attempting to invade the RED HOUSE before the December 31, 2016, deadline?
Because of this act from the PNC, this PNC led fledging coalition has now lost all votes it ever got on the sugar belt. What was very painful to many was watching how two PNC activists trampled on the name Cheddi Jagan on the dirty ground as they attempted to illegally invade the Cheddi Jagan Research Center (CJRC). The majority of people will never forget this act of insensitivity. But what is worse, was the profound untruth associated with Mr. Basil Williams as he tried to defend the case in front of a judge, claiming that the building was occupied. Not true!
Is this what legal advocacy has come to in Guyana? Fiction and on top of that, he was awarded politically for his lack of legal pedigree with something that a person like Nigel Hughes was better suited – something called a Senior Counsel (SC)? Has SC status now gone to drain? Shame on you President Granger for polluting this noble institution legally elevating such a politicized mind to SC status. (While I am at it, I want to congratulate two legal luminaries like Neil Boston and Vidyanand Persaud for their elevation to SC, they have served Guyana well).
The sensible course of action now is for all forces to back off and allow the courts to make a decision on this matter. Why did this matter have to go the political route? But as per normal, the noviceship of President Granger and his seemingly very limited Law Officer to the Cabinet, continues to put the chances of the PNC winning the 2020 elections into the deep negative ground. Right now, all they can depend on is the race vote, but that will not cut in 2020. They need the rational middle stratum that clearly not on the side of the PNC led coalition government anymore.
The actions of this PNC led coalition are exposing their discrimination and desperation at being politically relevant. But these infantile political and legal moves from someone who is not ready as yet to even attend Magistrate Court, is not helpful. Back off Basil and stop playing boy’s games in a men’s arena.
