After weeks of continued investigation into the robbery of Cambio Dealer Devendra Churaman at Number 79 Village, police in Berbice have managed to detain another suspect in connection with the robbery.
Crime Chief of B Division, Gary McAllister told this publication that, “We have a suspect in custody and we are continuing with the investigation”.
According to McAllister, the suspect was placed under arrest some two days ago based on information received about his possible role in the brazen robbery.
On December 19, a teen from Sand Hills appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown and was charged for robbery under arms committed on Devendra Churaman. He was remanded to prison.
Just a few weeks ago a 15-man gang armed with AK-47s, shotguns, cutlasses and sledgehammers launched an attack on the businessman, firing multiple shots in the process. Five of the men who were all masked entered through the front window of his two-storey building by smashing the glass with a sledgehammer. The businessman was alone at the time and was left traumatized after the bandits held him at gunpoint while demanding cash and jewellery.
They also used a sledgehammer and hammered through a steel door in his house to gain access to his bedroom.
The men eventually escaped with some $20 million in local and foreign currency along with $1 million in jewellery.
Investigations are continuing.
