Dear Editor,
I have to say that I somewhat like the way the police are unearthing, discovering and apprehending those who are responsible for murders and other forms of vicious crimes done recently and in the past that were unsolved and which we thought were done with, buried and forgotten. This is so good and somewhat assuring. Though loved ones cannot be brought back to life, it sure gives a feeling of relief, satisfaction and closure. On this score, I commend the investigative police work very much for being steadfast, determined and proficient in digging up and pursing these criminal cases, the perpetrators must not be allowed to continue to sleep or walk in leisure or comfort until their victim can rest in peace.
On a slightly different note – not in any way disconnected, let me say that I recognized that the Guyana Police Force does have within its ranks decent and worthy members who are expressly inclined to serving well, very smart and professional, and to them the public is forever grateful and hold them in high esteem. However, all is not well within the G.P.F, far from it. Violent crime is choking this nation, it is on the rise daily, non-stop, morning, noon and night, people are living in fear. The statistics given by the police that crime is down are dismissed with derision.
But as we know one bad apple can spoil the whole barrel as we are well aware also that the G.P.F has quite beyond its full quota of bad apples that have been its scourge, burying it in disrepute for quite some time now, thus the public have long lost trust and confidence in it. Much too many citizens have been damaged, wronged and hurt by the police, so much so that the regular appeal to the public to cooperate with the police falls on deaf ears. People have had their fill with rogue cops, many of whom are excessively hostile to decent law abiding citizens unnecessarily.
The G.P.F has its work cut out in its effort to eject rogue cops from its ranks, a somewhat tall order considering the frailties and x factor in us human beings, but definitely have to keep working at it if it must remain relevant in its service and protection to society. The Freddie Kissoon column in the Kaieteur News, November, 24th: “Two shocking mysteries in the police force, are things that just don’t make for comfort; they are alarming and frightening accounts, as if anything goes, as if disorder and reckless administration, are so embedded that it has become the norm. Definitely the G.P.F cannot continue with these kinds of conduct as highlighted by Kissoon and expect citizens to seriously accept its often repeated claptrap about police and citizens cooperation, building confidence and improving its image.

(Kaieteur News) – There was a time when things were used as they were intended. A fork for eating and a bed for sleeping.
