Accused mannequin thief begs for jail sentence

Alfred Junior, a steel pan player, was placed on $40,000 bail after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Madan Kissoon to face a charge that he stole one dress valued $2,500 and one mannequin worth $1,200 from a boutique owned by Chinese Nationals.
This occurred on November 24 at Lombard Street Georgetown.
City Police Prosecutor Colin Douglas told the court that on the day in question around 8:25 am, Police on patrol were called to the Chinese boutique and upon arrival they saw Alfred Junior standing a short distance away from the said store with the items. The store owners pointed him out to the Police and he was arrested and charged.
Alfred pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Madan Kissoon at a sitting of the Night Court in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Junior told the court, “Your honour I was walking and I saw the mannequin and a pretty red dress in the sun so I decided to pick it up and walk down the street. When I do decide to carry it back to the store, the Police came and arrested me.’’
Based on his explanation the court entered a not guilty plea.
City Police Prosecutor Colin Douglas objected to bail citing that the defendant is a repeat offender and if granted bail he will not return to the Court for the trial.
When the man heard that he was placed on $40,000 bail he told the Magistrate, “Boss man I am begging for a smaller bail; me ain’t get nobody to come and pay that high amount. Try with me nah man; things really rough.”
The Magistrate told the man that he will consider reducing the bail on his next court appearance. Upon hearing this, the man once again made another plea with the Magistrate. This time he stated, “Well sentence meh for a two months nah. I gone go and spend the time instead of paying the money because things rough. I rather go and spend some time in jail. Send me nah; I am begging you to sentence me.”
The man while being escorted out of the court once again asked that he be sentenced to prison because he is guilty of committing the offence. “I don’t know why the Magistrate change my plea from guilty to not guilty. I already pleaded guilty so sentence me to jail because I don’t have any money.”
The 48-year-old will make his next court appearance on December 5.
