Shameer Mohamed, the motor car driver who was charged with killing his friend Wavel Sheik Sabsook
in an accident at Diamond, East Bank Demerara on July 24, was yesterday freed of the charge after the court ruled that there was not sufficient evidence to convict.
Mohamed, of 99 Diamond, East Bank Demerara, had initially denied the charge which alleged that he drove motorcar PVV 2007, in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Sabsook, a disc jockey.
Magistrate Judy Latchman returned with the not guilty decision on Monday when the trial concluded in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
However, Mohammed has to return to court next month to face trial in relation to a charge of driving under the influence, which he has also denied.
It is alleged that on the same day, he drove the motorcar while he was under the influence of alcohol with his alcohol limit reaching 103 micrograms.
He is out on $10,000 bail.
The state was represented by Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones; Attorney Peter Hugh represented Mohamed.
According to reports, Sabsook was killed after the vehicle Mohamed was driving crashed and overturned in the vicinity of Distribution Services Limited (DSL) Diamond, East Bank Demerara. It was reported that the vehicle came to a stop after it smashed into a fence, broke a signboard and then burst into flames. Sabsook was reportedly hurled from the vehicle and onto the opposite side of the roadway.
A police official had said that a breathalyzer test performed on Mohamed revealed that his alcohol level was above the prescribed limit.
The DJ and his friend were reportedly returning home from a party in Georgetown when the accident occurred.
