-for Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Chairpersons and Vice Chairpersons
The annual internal elections for municipalities and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) are to be held before December 16, Government has announced.

The country’s NDCs and municipalities have until December 16th to hold their internal elections, the Ministry of Communities said yesterday.
According to the Ministry of Communities, yesterday, the internal elections are for the purposes of electing the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the various municipalities as well as the Chairpersons and Vice Chairpersons of the NDCs.
The yearly elections are in keeping with Section 28 (2) of the Local Government Act Chapter 28:02 and Chapter 28:01 of the Municipal and District Council Act, the ministry said.
After more than 20 years, local government elections were held for the first time in Guyana earlier this year.
This was after much bickering and delays over reforms, the final amendments which were passed in the National Assembly last year.
Guyana has nine municipalities and 62 NDCs which are charged with running the respective areas.
According to the ministry, yesterday, already some councils have begun holding elections with the Best/Klien NDC taking the lead and holding elections on Friday, November 18.
The Good Hope/Hydronie NDC was scheduled to hold elections yesterday while La Grange/Nismes is slated for November 23.
The NDC at Vergenoegen/Greenwich Park, on the East Bank Essequibo has announced that their elections would be held on Thursday.
“There are still some councils that have not yet finalised a date for elections. The Ministry of Communities also wishes to remind all councils that their budgets and work programs for the year 2017 are to be completed and submitted to the Ministry of Communities by November 15 for purposes of notification. The work programs are also to be prominently displayed by the councils for public perusal.”
