The Guyana Trades Union Congress has concluded its 4th Triennial Delegates Conference under the Theme: “Labour Policies, a Prerequisite in Creating a Green Economy and the new executive has been elected for the new Triennial Year 2016 to 2019. The new President is Sis. Coretta Mc Donald, General Secretary of the Guyana Teachers Union. Sis. Coretta Mc Donald has been elected unopposed after the withdrawal of Bro. Norris Witter. Sis. Mc Donald is the second woman who has been given the privilege of being President of the GTUC coming after Sis. Gillan Burton who served for the period 2007 to 2010.
She is also the second President coming from the Guyana Teachers’ Union following in the footstep of Bro. Basil Blair former General Secretary of that Union who served for the period 1976 to 1980. Sis. Eslyn Harris General Secretary of the Guyana Postal and Telecommunication Workers Union has been elected unopposed to the strategic post of Principal Assistant Secretary.

The post of Organizing Secretary has gone to a season campaigner Bro. Leslie Gonsalves immediate Past President of the GTUC. The Conference has further taken decision that instruct the GTUC to embark on a programme of building the capacity of the Youth and Women Movement and embrace an Education programme that brings about members and public awareness as to the role and the necessity of the Trade Union. The issue of the Green Economy must be kept in focus since the movement believes that this can realize great gain for workers and the country as a whole.
