Dear Editor,
The nation is faced with an explosive situation on its hands. We apparently have no proper place to situate our young ones when they leave their places of learning in their yearly thousands. What to do with this burgeoning demographic has always been a problem for the developing nations in recent years. This problem is not Guyana’s alone. Other nations even in our own vicinity are faced with similar problems.
A good way to start to solve the problem would be to engage the youth on massive public works projects. We can use the model being demonstrated by the Hon Minister of Public Works. Here he has been able to put together a viable workforce who are successfully tackling urban and some rural roads and bridges.
This model can be replicated nationally. The government now needs to develop with its experts programs for the rehabilitation of roads, bridges, drainage systems (inclusive of farm to market roads) throughout the nation.
This program could be implemented in an incremental fashion. In this manner we can tackle our built-in infrastructure and even create more roads and drainage structures using the bulk of labour from our young. Eventually we can develop a youth work brigade who we can export to the Caricom areas inclusive of Haiti. Many years ago a Government of Guyana engineering company made great waves in Caricom as they built much infrastructure in some of the islands. The same can be done again by putting our youths to productive use.
