Dear Editor,
Peeping Tom in his column wrote about the criminalization of our society and is asking where is it coming from? The answer is simple; the state is the root cause of our depraved and stagnated society. This occurs because we as citizens continue to allow the state to have a repressive tax regime that does not allow for the citizens to achieve anything for their toil- we see people leaving Guyana in droves for a better life in developed countries. So in order for the citizen to achieve or survive he or she must involve themselves in some sort of criminality- “we got fo hustle to make it”.
The other reason is, justice is absent in Guyana. So for the citizen to get justice he must take matters into his own hands then he becomes a criminal. The only way out of this is to make the state more responsive to the need of its citizens. The only way to do that is to elect leaders that put Guyana first and not themselves as been happening for the last fifty years.
