A 65-year-old home-alone grandmother of No 2 settlement, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, was brutally raped by her neighbour at knife point, during the wee hours of Monday.
The suspect, who is 37 years old, is reportedly a cane cutter at the Blairmont Estate.
According to information, the man and the woman reside next to each other.
It was reported that during the night, the accused, armed with a long knife, made his way over to the woman house where he removed a few louvre panes before squeezing himself into the house.
While there, he proceeded to put the knife to the woman’s neck and sexually assaulted her before making his escape.
The woman’s subsequent cries attracted neighbours, who called the police. The lawmen responded promptly and the suspect was subsequently arrested at his home and taken into custody.
The woman was taken to the hospital where she was medically examined, treated and sent away.
Charges are likely to be instituted soon.
