Dear Editor,
Allow me a few lines to comment on the article “The military and Cabinet meetings” to be held at Camp Ayanganna, Kaieteur News, Sunday, October 30, Page 23. Let me quote from the article, “The decision of the government to host Cabinet meetings at a military base is unprecedented in the Commonwealth Caribbean. Even the New Jewel Movement in Grenada never did this.”
I am a Guyanese who served with the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division during the 1983 Grenada invasion, where I fought to preserve freedom of the people. Here in Guyana I voted for Granger to make changes for the people from a corrupt, deceitful, and out-of-control PPP/C machinery, in which the PPP/C were only concerned with the rich and powerful and divided the people by race and class in terms of wealth.
Granger’s decision to hold Cabinet meetings at Camp Ayanganna should cease and desist immediately, as his decision could truly be considered as a disappointment. Where are the voices of Dr. David Hinds and Freddy Kissoon? Simply put, in a civilized democracy, no government should be holding Cabinet meetings at a military base. Obviously, the Granger administration is lacking advisors with a vision and sound judgment.
The assertion by Granger’s administration is that military veterans have the ability to do government work is lacking in essence or merit. The ability and knowledge of veterans are not an issue. The decision to hold Cabinet meetings at a military base is the issue, which could and should be considered as unacceptable. Mr Granger has appointed veterans and military officials in positions where neutral civilians should have been. Moreover, I frequent government buildings and saw numerous photographs of Granger as President and Brigadier on those photographs. The title of Brigadier needs removing because it gives the impression he is a current officer. And now holding Cabinet meetings at a military base jolt the imagination. Needless to say, if election was to be held today, I would vote for Granger again. However, the President needs to rethink his strategy. He should cease to have Cabinet meetings at a military base.
