Dear Editor,
Please allow me to add to the long list of complaints about the Mayor of Lethem, Mr. Carlton Beckles. Some things have not made it to your columns, but hopefully they will, if the residents of Lethem decide to speak up. I was born and raised in this Region and in 2006 I applied for a plot of land. I was given a royal run around by the officer in charge at the time. However, when the coalition took office, I felt hopeful with the promises of change and decided to see if any progress would be made in that regard. I was informed that the Housing Ministry is out of residential lots, but plans are being made to open a new housing scheme. That is understandable, so I have been waiting patiently since.
Now let me explain the reason for my outrage towards the Mayor in a situation that seemingly has nothing to do with him. In order to discuss, plan and make fundamental deliberations concerning the new housing scheme in Culvert City, ALL of the relevant authorities need to be present at that meeting, including the REO, the Mayor, the officer in charge of Housing in Lethem, the officer in charge of Lands and Surveys in Lethem, etc. This meeting was scheduled to take place on Wednesday the 28th of September and I was reliably informed that ALL of the relevant authorities were informed, yet the meeting had to be cancelled because the Mayor left the Region.
This shows a total lack of respect and consideration for the hundreds of persons who applied for plots of land and are anxiously awaiting for this issue to be resolved, so that they can get a plot of land to build a home for their families. It is my opinion that as the Mayor, Mr. Beckles would have the people’s best interest first and foremost on his list of priorities and especially in this case seeing that he faithfully (as chairman of the NDC) promised the residents on the local government campaign trail that if his party wins, he will lobby for an extension of the Culvert City housing scheme among other things.
Personally, I am extremely disappointed and I think he should get his priorities in order. He should spend less time behind the counter in his shop, looking after his personal needs and playing politics and more time at his desk in his office trying to meet the needs of the people of this Town. His actions, or lack thereof in some case reflect badly on the entire party and I can assure you Mr. Editor, that it will COST the APNU/AFC Coalition a lot of votes in the next elections.
Lethem resident
