Dear Editor,
This article is in reference to an article published in the Kaieteur News on 30th September, 2016, “Providence lands will now be used for duplexes, condos”. I must say it’s a good idea to make such a building to accommodate more families as Minister within the Ministry of communities, Valerie Patterson has said, but it is also a bad idea. Yes, it will accommodate more families, but tell me who will afford it? Do you think those apartments will be at a rental of $10,000 a month? No, if anything it will be more than $50,000.
The citizens of Guyana who are hardworking and struggling to have a better life won’t be able to afford to live there. Now some of you may say the rich people, the ones who already have everything will go there. Why will they go and they already have houses bigger and better than condos and duplexes? And after the Government realizes that no one is going there what will happen? Will they destroy it and start back the 1000 homes project? No, they will sell it to who they want to and keep the profits to themselves.
This is why the idea of this project is terrible. The citizens of Guyana would have a better chance if they had their land. They would build what they can afford and not worry about the rent being too high. Yes, I do agree that the numbers of house-lots cannot accommodate the numbers of applicants, but at least this way some citizen will be able to actually have a place of residence.
