A fire on Sunday night completely destroyed a two-bedroom dwelling house at Lot 16 A, Golden
Fleece, West Coast Berbice.
There were no reports of any injury, however, one individual, Elton Bacchus, is now homeless. He was not at home at the time of the fire. Nothing was saved from the inferno.
According to eye witnesses, around 21:00 hours on Sunday, a female associate of Bacchus was observed tampering with the lock to the premises. The individual eventually gained access to the house. Neighbours shortly afterward, raised an alarm after it was discovered that the house was on fire.
A unit from the Onverwagt Fire Station responded to the call, but there was nothing that the firemen could do to save the wooden building which was already engulfed by flames at the time they arrived on the scene.
The police have been called in to investigate what is suspected to be arson. When this publication visited, the police were conducting an interview with Bacchus who lived alone in the house at the time.
A female associate of Bacchus is reported to have openly threatened to set the house on fire, but the matter was never reported to the police.
