Nathan Heyliger yesterday appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, to answer to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
It is alleged that on September 11, last, on the Marudi Public Road, he drove motor lorry PVV 1650 in a manner dangerous to the public causing the death of Carl Dundas, a father of eight.
Heyliger, 27, of Lot 12 Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke/Linden Highway was released on $600,000 bail after pleading not guilty to the allegation.
A bail reduction was requested for the defendant by Attorney James Bond. However, the request was declined by the Magistrate who said that it was a reasonable sum.
Heyliger will make his next court appearance on October 18, when statements will be served.
According to reports, Heyliger was driving at a fast rate when he collided with a parked truck that was reportedly seized from BaiShanLin Company, by officials of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).
Dundas, 41, a porter, of Kuru Kuru and his wife Rona were occupants of the vehicle driven by Heyliger.
They were reportedly leaving Yarrowkabra, after participating in Amerindian Heritage Celebration, where Nathan was allegedly imbibing. Based on reports, Dundas was seated in the front passenger seat.
Both Dundas and his wife received injuries and were rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital. Dundas succumbed to his injuries a few days after.
According to reports, Dundas and Heyliger were workmates who operated a truck for a dredge owner in the interior.
