A relative of three men charged for the Berbice triple-murder was yesterday remanded to prison charged with accessory to the crime.
It is alleged that Catchew Chetram, 63, of Lot 17 Black Bush Polder, Corentyne,
Berbice, knowing that Rakesh Karramchan, Carlton Chetram, his son Jairam Chetram and Tameshwar Jagmohan, had murdered Pawan Chandradeo, Naresh Rooplall and Jaikarran Chandradeo at Cookrite Savannah, received, comforted and provided assistance to them.
Chetram is said to be a relative of Jairam Chetram and his father, who is a cousin of Karramchan.
Catchew Chetram, who is being represented by Attorney Mark Conway, was not required to plead to the indictable charge read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Rakesh Karramchan, 40, of Lot 2 Sheet Anchor, New Amsterdam, Berbice; Carlton Chetram, 38; his son Jairam Chetram, 18; and with Tameshwar Jagmohan, 26, all farmers of Mahaicony have been charged with murder.
During a bail application for Catchew Chetram, Conway asked for the accused to be released on reasonable bail based on the fact that he turned himself into police after he was informed that ranks from the Major Crimes Investigation Unit, were searching for him.
Conway said that his client’s actions clearly show that he is not a flight risk. According to the attorney, the accused was kept in custody beyond 72 hours.
However, Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers opposed bail for the accused citing the serious nature of the offence. Jeffers said that the case file is complete and advice was sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The prosecutor said that the matter is ready for commencement of a preliminary inquiry.
The Chief Magistrate instructed Chetram to return to court on October 18, in the Mibicuri Magistrate’s Court.
According to reports, the bullet riddled bodies of Pawan Chandradeo, 37; his son Jaikarran Chandradeo, 15, both of Mibicuri Creek North and Naresh Rooplall, 33, of Number 70 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, were found in the Cookrite Backdam at Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne on July 22.
The bodies were discovered by a rice farmer of Black Bush Polder and his workmen.
It was reported that the slain teen still had a bag with fish slug around his shoulder. The corpses reportedly bore gaping shotgun wounds to the head and upper bodies.
It was reported that 13-year-old Alvin Chandradeo, who accompanied his father, Pawan, and brother, Jaikarran, was left at a pump station on a dam, as the others went further into the Savannah to fish. The lad stayed at the pump station from where he reportedly heard gunshots.
