Dear Editor,
As a citizen of this country we all know that the economy has slowed down. The lower and middle class citizens are the individuals who struggle to provide for their household; we all are depending on government to provide jobs and income. I have a couple of ideas that I would like to share. The police force has so many vehicles not working and would be parked at various mechanic shops or the police stations.
If the police force has mechanics to do maintenance, but has a shortage of work force, why not recruit the school dropouts to work with the police force mechanics, they can assist in the spraying (bodywork) of crashed vehicles, also the repairs of these vehicles. By doing this the youths would be learning a trade in auto mechanic and auto body repairs.
This would help tremendously in crime fighting. Government or GRA should manufacture motor vehicle number plates. The number plates should be permanently registered for a car(s) owner(s), the number plate (s) would be a lifetime property of the vehicle owner. Jobs can be created by manufacturing the number plates. To simplify it the plates would be the same as PNN 1345, registered to V. Ishwaridin of 56 area H Ogle If I sell my car I have to take off the plate, when I obtain or buy a next car I would notify GRA that my plate would be registered for the car I obtained or bought . The person that bought my car, if never owned a car has to request a registration number. This would be the plate for new owner’s car. The number plates have to be made of metal or aluminum, and the letters and numbers must be stamped on the plate.
The parking meters in the city are a great idea; about the cost and the percentage to be paid to city council, that I have NO idea how or what that should be done. But they will ease the traffic congestion and provide an income to maintain the city. Citizens will complain that they bought the vehicle for their comfort, that’s understandable. Council can provide free parking out of the city. The Railway Embankment from Vlissengen Road to Parade Street, can be paved and made a parking lot for citizens, there are many access and exit points on the Railway Embankment where citizens can access public transportation to enter the city. The money earned from the parking meters can provide for security and lighting for the free parking lots.
USAID did a survey on what does the public think about the police force. It said the citizens have NO confidence in the law or the police. Citizens see the police as the worse individuals to deal with. The traffic police are so authoritarian when doing traffic stops. Drivers have so much fear of these traffic officers that knowing if anything is wrong that they can face being locked up.
The way the police solve crimes are by torture (beating suspects to confess to a crime), when the suspect appear in court, they would tell the magistrate they were beaten. I have no political affiliation to any party and I have no financial influence. Should this be the reason why government or politicians can’t use or listen to my ideas? I have written many times to both government past and present, on the installation of Fire Sprinklers in commercial buildings. The Fire Chief has to review and past all building permits; it is known that commercial buildings are more at risk of fire. Why not instruct them that by law and the Fire Chief’s recommendation that for the safety of our citizens, they must have sprinklers?
This is how our country laws and system operate. Laws are broken and because somebody knows somebody we are unable to have justice. From all sections of society we see this happening. If we don’t stand and make a change how can we better our country and our living standards? Are we building a better Guyana. I am a patriot of our great country and I want to do better; I want our country to do better
Vishul Ishwaridin
