Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday placed a couple on bonds to keep the peace for 12 months or in default six months imprisonment, after they declined to offer evidence against each other on a wounding charge.
Janet Gravesande, 35, of Vreed-en-Hoop, West Bank Demerara, and Erico Joseph of Lot 347 South Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, were charged for unlawfully and maliciously wounding each other on September 13, last, at Aranka Landing.
The court was told that the couple share a common law relationship. Gravesande and Joseph were involved in a heated argument on the day in question, after Joseph did not approve of her travelling to Georgetown.
The prosecutor said that the man became angry and chopped the woman on her right index finger. In retaliation, Gravesande armed herself with an offensive weapon and chopped the man to his forehead and head.
During his address to the court, Joseph said that he and Gravesande own a business in the interior. He claimed that their shop is currently unattended.
