Dear Editor,
The Freddie Kissoon column of Monday, September 12, 2016 on the late Cyrus Boyce requires clarifications necessary for the historical purpose newspapers serve to posterity. I have known Boyce all my life. As I said at his funeral we became closer as pioneers [not GNS] at KURU-KURU Coop College in the early 1970’s. We went separate ways around 1974. He was then employed by the PNC up to the Desmond Hoyt phase, returning under Robert Corbin. When current President David Granger took office, Boyce continued to work privately with Corbin, we did speak about a gratuity package his words were as follows, “The chief [Meaning Corbin ] told OG’s [or ‘Green clothes’ -terms describing Brigadier David Granger] that he gon tek care of his people.” This was referring to Cyrus Boyce and Jenetta, who was Mr. Corbin’s secretary during his time as Opposition Leader.
What transpired between Boyce and his ’Chief ’ concerning that concept of ‘taking care of his people’, I cannot speak with clarity or truthfully on, except to say that this happened before the 2015 elections, and from my opinion the onus on that gratuity rests with the initial promise made. Boyce was indeed offered employment by the General Secretary of the PNC after the elections, but could not engage that employment.
Cyrus had limitations that the GS seemed unaware off; Minister Patterson was a friend of the Charities initiated by Boyce, while Mr Patterson was a private person. We conversed on the job opportunity and I agreed that he should embrace it, as it presented a much more comfortable and suitable atmosphere as there were health problems also that Boyce had to deal with. About the gratuity figure mentioned in Freddy’s article, this is the first time I‘m hearing of it.
In respect to the mentioned ‘covenant’ with Boyce, this is also new to me. What I can comment on was the ‘Buxton Conspiracy’ articles, enough to say that there was no Buxton Conspiracy, nor was Ronald Waddle an intellectual author of the events in the village at that time.
I discussed these articles with Waddle, Boyce and other media operatives who were very active at that time, and who are still alive today, and there were several scenarios as to why such sensational narratives were written. Now, Cyrus Boyce has crossed the river. May my friend’s soul rest in peace.
Barrington Braithwaite
