Dear Editor,
To the outside world that is seeing our hinterlands for the first time, Guyana is a paradise. Taking a drive along the East Coast up to Happy Acres and watching all the big houses, we might think Guyana is a land of millionaires. But the majority of the local people in the villages (hinterland and rural) live mostly in poverty thanks to the PPP and PNC. This paradise however, has not only been lost; it has been purloined. First, financial conspiracies were started by the PPP and now they are being carried out by the PNC under a PNC led government headed by President David Arthur Granger.
What has happened to Guyana since May 2015 is outrageous? The people in their numbers voted against the corruption of the PPP, but ended up with a worst form of the PPP (the PNC and the Granger Cabinet). Then under the PPP’s Office of the President, we had operators making deals left right and center; not for the country’s benefit but for the corridors of power. Today in the Ministry of the Presidency, from the top to the bottom, it is deals and more deals all focused at flushing big chunks of cash out of the Treasury into the pockets of the friends of cabinet members and their neigbours, their buddies and even their drivers.
Today we have Ministers appointing their relatives in key positions in the government and their army mates to act as facilitators for the grand scheme. I challenge Minister David Patterson to deny that someone very close to him who is under-qualified and who could not even get a job overseas is now strategically placed in the government. Then he has another close relative, high up in the Minister of Business office when she does not even have the requisite qualifications.
Already in just 14 short months, more than three billion dollars have been muddled in controversial deals. The dangerous thing is the PNC/AFC boys and girls may have mastered their art even faster than the PPP. Is this why the Granger government is not transferring the $10 billion from the agencies that Anand Goolsarran identified as having moneys outside of the Treasury like Forestry Commission and NICIL? When will they slip these funds away into other areas rather than deposit them into the Consolidated Funds?
When we thought only the PPP could use the state for all sorts of conspiratorial activities, let me introduce you to Team Granger. The ATM of the Treasury is the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and the Ministry of Natural Resources run by two AFC Ministers. A thick-headed competitor in the Ministry of Health tried to challenge them at the game.
