Murders, rape reports down for second consecutive month

For the second consecutive month, police have reported a significant drop in serious crimes ranging from murder to rape.

A release issued yesterday by the Police Public Relations Department stated that there was an 18 percent decrease in serious crimes at the end of August, relative to the same period last year.
There was a 10 percent reduction in reports of murder; a seven percent decrease in gun-related robberies; a 17 percent decrease in armed robberies where other instruments were used; a nine percent decrease in robberies where no instruments were used; a 19 percent decrease in robberies with violence; a combined 40 percent decrease in break and enter and larceny, and burglary; a 20 percent decrease in rape; and a 38 percent decrease in larceny from the person.
In July, the Force had recorded a 16 percent drop in murders, a nine percent decrease in gun-related robberies; a 12 percent decrease in armed robberies where other instruments were used; a 22 percent decrease in robberies with violence; a two percent increase in robberies with aggravation; a 17 percent decrease in rape; and a 21 percent decrease in break and enter and larceny.
Burglary is down by 15 percent while larceny from the person decreased by 35 percent.
The data was significant, in that, previous crime data had regularly shown an increase in incidents of rape. The statistics were comparative to July 2015.
But the Guyana Police Force once again recorded a rise in road fatalities. Eighty-seven fatalities were recorded at the end of August; seven more than for the same period last year. There was a reduction in serious and minor accidents, but again an increase in damage accidents. Speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and inattentiveness, continue to be the main causes of fatal accidents.
The Guyana Police Force has charged 48,585 persons with traffic offences so far this year. This includes 18,053 for speeding of which 7, 133 have been fined; 1,168 for driving under the influence of alcohol of which 268 have been fined; 1, 108 for unlicenced drivers of which 631 have been fined; 2,016 for overloaded minibus of which 872 have been fined and 476 for using cell phones whilst driving, of which 268 have been fined.
The Force also used the opportunity to point out that, to date, 87 officers and other ranks have benefitted from Overseas Training from India, China, USA, Russia, Argentina, Jamaica, etc. in Financial Investigation, Fingerprinting Identification, Maritime Interdiction and Prosecution, (d) Countering Organised Crime, Public Order Maintenance, Cyber Training, Footwear Impression and Identification, Counteraction against Terrorism and Extremism, and Surveillance and Counter Surveillance.
Currently there are over two hundred and sixty ranks undergoing the Basic Recruit Training at the three Police Colleges.
Meanwhile, the COPs and Faith Community Network continues to assist significantly in invigilating and marking of the Learner Driver Theoretical Examinations. In terms of Juvenile Offenders, to date they have dealt with 321 such cases countrywide, including 189 males and 132 females, who have been spared the ignominy of the Criminal Justice System, due to their intervention between the Complainants/Reporter, Victims and Police.
