Police ranks in Berbice on Wednesday arrested a New Amsterdam man after a quantity of marijuana was found in his possession at a roadblock on the Corentyne Public Road, in the vicinity of the Number 51 station.
According to police sources, ranks acting on information received, stopped a minibus and proceeded to search the vehicle, during which time a black haversack was discovered. Upon further checks, a plastic bag was found under a seat containing three wrapped parcels.
In the presence of the driver, the lawmen opened the parcels which contained leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana. The items, confirmed to be the illicit drug, were weighed and amounted to 1,680 grams (3.7 lbs).
The man was placed under arrest and charges are likely to be laid shortly.
Investigations are ongoing.
