Duo charged with attempted murder of E’bo barber

Mark Rafino, 23, a labourer, of Queenstown and also of Wakenaam, and a 16-year-old of Adventure on the Essequibo Coast were jointly charged yesterday with attempted murder.
The duo are implicated in the shooting and wounding of 43 -year-old barber, Dale Troy Hercules, who was shot to his body three times last Saturday morning in front of his home.
The two accused appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court before magistrate Sunil Scarce and were refused bail, due to the seriousness of the offence and the fact that the victim is still hospitalized. The teenage will however be kept at the Sophia Juvenile Centre while Rafino will be kept at the Camp Street Prison until the commencement of the trial on September 27.
The police stated on September 3, at Henrietta Village, Rafino and the teenager, armed with a gun, robbed Hercules of a quantity of jewellery before shooting him to his chest, stomach and leg. One of the accused was subsequently arrested while attempting to board a speedboat at Supenaam, while the other was arrested at the Parika Stelling.
The two men have accused the police of placing black plastic bags on their heads and beating them. The teenager claimed that the police placed two black plastic bags on his head and slapped him some three hundred times. Magistrate Sunil Scarce ordered that the two accused be examined immediately by a medical practitioner before they are placed in confinement.
The 16-year-old was charged before with larceny and was placed in the custody of his aunt. The police said the teenager stole a gold chain worth $80,000 from a child’s neck.
The police are preparing additional charges against the duo.
Meanwhile, Dale Hercules is said to be responding well. The well known Essequibo barber remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the Suddie Public Hospital. He is scheduled to be discharged before the end of the week.
