History was created in the Berbice High Court when for the first time a video link was used during a High Court trial in the Ancient County.

Latchman Samaroo

The video link was used in the trial of a man who is accused of stabbing his uncle-in-law to death back in 2014 following an altercation at his grandmother- in- law’s wake.
Latchman Samaroo, 28, a fishmonger and father of four of Lot 45 Bacchus Street, Rosignol Village West Bank Berbice, is on trial before Justice Jo Ann Barlow and a mixed jury.
Samaroo is accused of murdering his uncle in law Surijpaul Ramnarine called “Mud Foot” and “Boyo”, 51 of Blairmont Village West Bank Berbice on Saturday December 13, 2014, at Rosignol following an ongoing feud.
Ramnarine was allegedly stabbed in the chest around 12:10 hrs on Saturday morning.
The incident took place at a wake which was being held for Ramnarine’s mother at Rosignol Village West Bank Berbice.
Samaroo is being represented by attorney at Law Goomatie Singh.
State Prosecutor attorney at Law Stacy Goodings is presenting the state’s case.
The suspect and Ramnarine were embroiled in an argument, which escalated into a fight..It is alleged that the accused took out a 12 inch knife and stabbed Ramnarine. He then made good his escape.
Samaroo gave himself up a few days later at the Blairmont Police Station.
The video link was used in the testimony of Seenarine Ramnarine, called “Blacka,” who lives in Barbados.
The man testified that Latchman was his brother. He testified to being at the venue for most of the afternoon as they were preparing for his mother’s wake. He said he was with the men and some others.
Samaroo and his brother were arguing and he saw Samaroo stab his brother.
Seenarine Ramnarine was subsequently cross-examined by Defence Attorney Goomatie Singh.
A number of witnesses have testified so far for the prosecution, including taxi driver Samal Khan.
Khan told the court that he was at home when he was called and told something. As a result he drove his car, PEE 9826, to the scene and took Ramnarine to the Fort Wellington Hospital.
Harikesh Ramnarine in his testimony told the court that the deceased was his father. He witnessed the postmortem examination which was conducted by Dr. Vivikanand Brijmohan.
Police Detective Constable Andel Doris testified to visiting the scene on the night of the incident. He conducted interviews and took a number of photographs of the scene. The photographs were then tendered into evidence.
The final witness was Detective Sergeant Zoanne Johnson, who testified to conducting investigation into the matter. She took a caution statement from the accused.
In the caution statement, which was tendered into evidence the accused stated that: ”Me na bore the man, me and the man had a scramble and all two a we fall on the ground. Me come off from he and me run away after he brother pick up a wood and lash me windscreen on me bus. Me keep looking and de man bin still lie down on the ground.
“Me thought the man drunk and he knock he self-hard. Me na stab he me na know if he had anything in he hand and when he fall if the thing bore he. Me na know nothing.”
The preliminary inquiry was conducted by Magistrate Rhondell Weever at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court.
The trial is continuing.
